What truly sets Bessou apart in the crowded culinary landscape of New York City are several core tenets that guide its operations and menu development. These distinguishing features ensure that a visit here remains memorable long after the last course is cleared. Understanding these highlights provides a clearer picture of the restaurant's overall appeal and dedication to excellence.
Commitment to Ingredient Sourcing: Bessou places paramount importance on the provenance of its ingredients. The kitchen operates with a philosophy that the best dishes begin with the finest raw materials. This dedication often translates into seasonal menus that celebrate peak freshness, ensuring vibrant flavors that speak for themselves without excessive manipulation. This focus appeals directly to diners who value transparency and quality in their food supply chain.
Thoughtful Menu Construction: The menu at Bessou is curated to offer variety while maintaining focus. Diners can expect creative interpretations of familiar concepts alongside innovative new creations, all presented with an eye toward aesthetic appeal.
Atmosphere of Refined Comfort: The interior design fosters an environment conducive to relaxed enjoyment. It manages to feel both polished and inherently comfortable, avoiding the pretension sometimes associated with high-end dining. This careful calibration of space allows conversation to flow easily and the dining experience to remain the central focus, supported by attentive yet unobtrusive service.
Dedication to Culinary Craftsmanship: Beyond the ingredients, the execution is key. Bessou’s culinary team demonstrates a high level of technical proficiency. Whether it’s the precise temperature control for proteins or the delicate layering of flavors in sauces and accompaniments, there is a palpable sense of craft applied to every plate leaving the kitchen. This dedication to the art of cooking elevates the overall dining proposition significantly.
In conclusion, Bessou at 25 11th Ave offers a compelling narrative woven through its menu, its setting, and its service philosophy. For anyone seeking an establishment where culinary integrity is paramount and the dining environment complements the quality of the food, Bessou presents itself as an essential destination. It is a place built on the foundation of respect—respect for the ingredients, respect for the craft, and respect for the guest experience.

The Chicken was delicious and super juicy. Very oily though so I suggest putting it on paper napkins to absorb some of the oil and add something else to your meal. The Scallion Mayo was great with the chicken. More

This cute little restaurant has a very good Japanese inspired menu. Everything we ordered was delicious, the only problem is the erratic spacing of the courses. We frequently had to wait 10 minutes between courses, and I think we could have gotten maybe 2 dishes at the same time. But I really enjoyed the "sushi" on the fried rice cakes.

Hi! Today I decided to try this place out as the line was long and was intrigued by the “Japanese comfort food” branding. I ordered the Japanese fried chicken with fries and spicy mayo. The spicy mayo was amazing but the chicken was very mushy and extremely sweetened. I also ordered a side of fries and found 3 pieces of brown hair!! I knew for sure it wasn’t mine as I have black hair! Overall I was disappointed and dissatisfied by the food

Tried Bessou for brunch and had an excellent meal. We tried the fried chicken karaage fried, banana hotcakes foster, Japanese curry shakshuka with pork and the black garlic teriyaki steak frites. They only have teas and drip coffee. Cappuccino would have been nice to add to menu.

What I got and what they advertised was very different. Before I ordered, I asked the woman at the counter if the sandwich in the picture was the menu item I was ordering, and she confirmed, yes. Instead, I got something that was soggy, not spicy, and sad… on wonderbread. Skip this place.

Updated review : 5 stars I was very pleased the fresh buns are back + the original recipe for the chicken sando as well ! Thanks for listening to your loyal customers . I had the Bessou chicken club, and it was as it should be absolutely magnificent !!
Old Review: What happened? Last year, my fav hot Honey Nanban chicken go to lunch sando used to have a fresh bun (see pic). It was so jam-packed with flavorful ingredients. I've been back only to find the chicken flavor profile has gone downhill, and a packaged, processed martins bun was replacing the fresh bun ..ugh! Bring back the original recipe, please! Good food and interesting menu items (not just the same flavors you get at all Japanese restaurants). The fried chicken was really good. Atmosphere was cozy and nice, not too loud. Service was good as well. Overall a bit pricey considering the amount of food you get.

Well, what can I say? We came here for a quick bite — my mom went for a small snack: a deep-fried rice triangle with shrimp. Unfortunately, it didn’t impress. The flavor was bland, and the portion tiny for what it cost.
My burger wasn’t much better. Edible, sure — but completely forgettable. No finesse, no standout elements, just something to fill the stomach.
Given that this is part of a food court with plenty of other options, it’s hard to justify coming back. The whole thing had a bit too much of that tourist-trap vibe. You’re better off looking one stall further.

Some delicious food. We enjoyed seasonal menu. I didn't like they serve cold sake in a used jar. I found it offensive to drink beautiful sake out of used jar and also not right for those sake brewery who went pain staking labor to make this. I am probably too Japanese on this. :(

I adored this place!!! It's in a food hall so the vibe was great with lots of flexibility and view of the skyline. The pier is also a a great third space.
The server was super helpful and gave my friend some extra sauces to try as well. Everything we got was a hit! I got the make it a meal (3 pieces of karage and a spicy tuna crispy rice) for around $20 with tax. IT WAS DELICIOUS!!! Chicken was super flavorful, and the most crispy I'd ever had without being greasy. The crispy rice with spicy tuna was also really good and was overflowing since they gave me a good amount. Overall amazing spot for friends and a spin on Japanese food for a fair price and portion!

Their foods surpassed my expectations. I expected fast food-grade quality, such as salty, greasy fried foods. No! They were actually, legitimately delicious. The fried rice was crispy and the scallops and shrimps on top with sauce amazingly enhanced each other’s flavor. The chicken karaage was crispy outside and tender inside, and moderately salty. I enjoyed dining near the water.

Not the Bessou I Remember
I used to love going to Bessou back in the day, so when I came across this location inside the market, I was excited to give it a try. I ordered my go-to dish — the karaage — along with a sushi rice bowl, but spending nearly $80 here turned out to be a huge mistake.
The karaage was incredibly disappointing. It was overcooked, almost burnt, and so dry and hard that it completely lacked the juicy tenderness karaage is known for.
The sushi rice bowl was even worse. It was loaded with daikon and pickled vegetables, with hardly any sashimi to speak of. What little sashimi there was tasted off — not fresh, with both the temperature and flavor being completely wrong. To top it off, they used smoked salmon instead of sashimi salmon, which made no sense and felt lazy for a dish like this. And the rice? Soggy and stale. It was honestly inedible. At that point, I would’ve been happier with a $15 poke bowl somewhere else.
It’s such a letdown to see how far the quality has fallen. Bessou used to be a place I truly loved, but this experience left me frustrated and disappointed. It’s disappointing to see a place I once loved lose what made it special.

(Update) Went there for dinner, grilled cabbage and smashed potatoes were so good, deviled eggs - not so much. Tan tan noddle was also good!
Cute Japanese spot, good for casual eating with friends. Tempura soba is really delicious, salmon burger was good too. Don’t miss out their fluffy pancake, me and my friend ordered it for dessert and worked out perfectly!

Tried the $50 fixed menu. Overall pretty good. They did charge 21% gratuity for which I would say they didn't pour sake frequently enough during the meal to deserve that. The fried chicken wings were abysmal, weakest item on that menu. I did like the trout and especially the salmon on the fried triangle shaped rice.
